Giving Online Speeches at Online Events

December 4, 2023 – Increasingly, companies' services are provided in virtual teams. Therefore, their leaders must also increasingly give online speeches – not just during the Christmas season. Here are some tips on what to pay attention to.

Giving Online Speeches – Tip 1: Don't sit down.

When you stand and move as a speaker, you send more body language signals to your audience. This enhances your impact and the effectiveness of your statements.

Giving Online Speeches – Tip 2: Energize yourself.

When we communicate with an invisible audience, we show less gesture and facial expression. Then our words can quickly appear bland. Therefore, energize yourself before your appearance – like an actor.

Giving Online Speeches – Tip 3: Ensure good lighting.

Pay attention to good lighting in the room. In particular, ensure no shadows fall on your face so that your facial expressions can be clearly seen.

Giving Online Speeches – Tip 4: Emphasize key messages.

Online, it is more challenging to convey messages credibly and impressively than at in-person events. Emphasize your key messages – for example, with graphics or short videos.

Giving Online Speeches – Tip 5: Check the impact of your surroundings.

While it may seem human to have clutter in your home office, does it correspond to the message you want to convey? Check this before your online appearance.

Giving Online Speeches – Tip 6: Look and appear well-groomed.

The same applies to your appearance. It may seem casual to see the boss with a three-day beard or the boss in a shabby t-shirt. But does that create the desired effect?

Giving Online Speeches – Tip 7: Address the audience personally.

In online speeches, you can communicate with the audience only to a limited extent through eye contact. Therefore, regularly address individual people or groups directly – for example, the technicians or employees in the home office or in South Africa.

Giving Online Speeches – Tip 8: Be familiar with the technology.

The more you are distracted by technology while speaking, the more impersonal you come across. For speeches to a larger audience, arrange for personnel support to relieve you.

Giving Online Speeches – Tip 9: Create variety.

Try out new things from time to time – for example, music in the background. Anything that adds excitement to the narrative is allowed.

Giving Online Speeches – Tip 10: Work with storytelling.

Take your audience on a thought journey as much as possible – for example, through the past or upcoming year. Tell them exciting stories.
