New Edition of the Book "The Leader as Influencer"

October 26, 2023 – A new edition of the book "The Leader as Influencer: How to Win Employees as Followers" by the founder and director of IFIDZ, Barbara Liebermeister, has been published by BusinessVillage.

In the slightly revised new edition, Barbara presents the thesis: "Leaders and influencers have much in common: they are not born but made – by their 'followers'," meaning the individuals who are willing to follow them and their ideas, or be inspired and motivated by them.

Influencer Leadership is Gaining More and More Relevance

The publisher BusinessVillage decided to release the new edition of the book because the core theses and statements of the book, which was written before the outbreak of the Corona crisis, have gained significant relevance since its first edition – among other reasons, "because today, leaders are much more frequently faced with the challenge of leading virtual and hybrid teams and thus their employees at a distance," as stressed by the publisher representative Jens Grübner.

The Expectations of Leadership Have Changed

Furthermore, according to Barbara, the book author, due to the changed circumstances and the intensified shortage of skilled professionals and leaders, "the expectations of leaders have changed – not only from the members of Generation Z." They must lead their employees, among other things, on a longer leash and trust in their competence and loyalty. Therefore, the ability to build relationships and network to achieve the desired effect will become a central success factor in leadership. Thus, IFIDZ is convinced: "Influencing is the leadership of tomorrow."

Leaders Need Partially New Skills

In her 262-page book, the economist Barbara Liebermeister, who also hosts two podcasts, explains that this requires new leadership qualities: "Credibility, inspiration, and communication at eye level are becoming key competencies that define successful, effective leaders – qualities that the so-called influencers have in both the digital and analog worlds." It is not about influencing people with manipulative intent, but about effective relationship management, which is based, among other things, on the authenticity and integrity of the leaders, because, as Liebermeister states: "True power no longer results from the conferred hierarchical status; it arises from within – from the personality."

Learning from Influencers in Social Media

In her book, structured into eight chapters, Barbara explains how leaders can develop a personality that makes them and thus their companies future-proof and successful. She describes the mechanisms on which influencer success is based and what leaders can learn from them. Using numerous companies and personalities that are pioneers in this area, she demonstrates how influencer leadership works and provides readers with practical tips to realize such.
